Have a Great Summer!

I hope everyone has a great and happy summer!

Thanks to everyone for a great school year. Lots of ups and a few downs along the way. Bottom line, we all learned a lot about things, each other and ourselves. GW is losing a few very important people this year. Mr. Blake is moving on to Linwood School, Mrs. Zubec is off to Brooklands school and Mr. Orr is retiring after 33 years of amazing work in the St. James Assiniboia School Division. We welcome back Ms. Bakker in 2014-15 as well.

Parents and students, please take a few minutes to read this blog post titled '7 Activities Teens Should Avoid On Social Media'. Stay safe online and make good decisions about who you talk to,  what you post and what you share.

Have a happy summer! Enjoy the sun and we will see you in the fall!

Andy Mead.

History of George Waters

Thanks to Mr. Orr for sharing this...

History of George Waters Middle School

The George Waters Junior High was officially opened on November 24,1993, and at the time served 120 grade 7&8 students.

September of 1996 brought a change to the school by officially renaming the school as George Waters Middle School.  In September of 1997 the school was expanded to include grade 6 students.  The school is named after George Waters, a long time resident and member of the St. James School Board.

Mr. Waters was born on July 1, 1919 and served Canada overseas in the RCAF in World War II.  This was followed by 15 years in the service as a Recruiting Officer.   He then went on to Personnel Director for the Department of Veterans Affairs and then Director of Personnel at the Deer Lodge Hospital before retiring in 1985.

Mr. Waters was first elected as a School Trustee in 1965 and also served as Chairman of the Board for four 1-year terms and six 1-year terms as Chairman of the Finance-Facilities Committee.  Altogether Mr. Waters served for 18 years as a school trustee retiring in 1983.

One of the many interests Mr. Waters had was expanding programs for persons with disabilities.  He and his wife Constance devoted many hours to developing organizations such as St. James Industries, Westwood Vocational Centre and the Laureate Academy for student who are intellectually impaired.  He and his wife also spearheaded the work experience program in the School Division.

Mr. Waters has also served as a member of the St. James Scholarship Foundation and instituted two very important scholarships-The Robert Kellow Scholarship and the Deer Lodge Centre Scholarship.  He was also very involved in the development of the Western Aviation Museum and is a long time member of the Winnipeg branch of the United Nations Association.

In his distinguished career George Waters has received many awards including recognition from the Mayor’s Office, City of Winnipeg, and the Federal Government.   Mr. Waters has also received the Canada 125 Governor General’s Medal.

Mr. Waters always put the interests of the students in the division first and foremost.  He and his wife often spoke with pride about the education their six children received while attending schools in the east end of St. James.

Parent Council Fundrasing 2014-15: Show and Save Discount Card and Coupon Book

Our Parent Council will be raising money this September by selling the Show & Save Card and Coupon Book.

We are very excited to announce that Superstore will once again be participating in the upcoming Fall Show & Save Book!

The Coupon Book has over $10,000 in money saving offers including coupons for purchases at numerous grocery stores, restaurants and businesses throughout the city.  For only $20 you can experience endless savings with the Re-usable Card and Coupon Book.

By purchasing your Show & Save from us, you will be supporting our School while at the same time saving your family a lot of money.

The Parent Council makes $10 on each book and 70% of these fundraising efforts go directly into the individual student accounts to be used for spring camp, band camp, school trips and clothing. The more you fundraise, the less out of pocket expenses you can have for your child.

Consider how you can support your child and George Waters Middle School.

Wear Red Tuesday

The Spouses of the RCMP have created an event to show their support for the fallen Moncton RCMP officers. We can't all be in Moncton for the memorial service but we can show our support. Let's wear red on Tuesday to show that the fallen, wounded, their families, and all members of the RCMP are in our hearts. Please share this event and invite all your friends. Wouldn't it be nice if the sea of red RCMP serge's wasn't alone on Tuesday. Stand with them! Thank-you!

All student iPads are being collected on June 12, 2014 to homeroom teachers. A set of instructions will come soon but to ensure all items of a personal nature that are currently on the device should be transferred to a different location prior to it's return.

The Winnipeg Library (@wpglibrary) Is Looking for Inspiring Ideas!

Winnipeg Public Library is looking for "Inspiring Ideas" to help plan for the future, and we want to hear from teachers, parents and students.  From now until the end of June, the library is hoping to hear from thousands of Winnipeggers about what they want from their library - now and into the future.

I am hoping that you can share some information about “Inspiring Ideas” with the schools in your division to get the word out.  I have attached a poster and some ads in case there is an opportunity to advertise around the schools or in any materials that will be sent home with the kids.

There are a number of ways for people to get involved:
1.    Complete our short, interactive online survey (there's a chance to win an iPad mini donated by the Friends of Winnipeg Public Library!). Paper copies in large print and in French are available at all libraries.

2.    Watch our short project video and share it with your friends, family, organizations and networks.

3.    Talk to our Ambassadors at various community events, at any of our 20 libraries, or at any of our mobile program sites.

4.    Attend one of 4 Ideas Fairs to give your input through interactive stations. Door prizes and activities for all ages so bring the whole family.

5.    Sign up for updates through our Inspiring Ideas website and keep informed as we develop a new Strategic Plan.

6.    Help spread the word! Please share the Inspiring Ideas website (inspiringideas.wpl.winnipeg.ca)

City of Winnipeg Senior of the Year Award 2014

June 4, 2014

To Whom it May Concern,

I am pleased to enclose a copy of the Mayor’s Senior of the Year Award application which invites youth 18 years of age or younger to nominate a senior who has made a difference in his or her life or the life of others. This initiative gives young people the opportunity to recognize the important role older adults play in our community.

The Mayor’s Age Friendly & Seniors Advisory Committee was formed by Mayor Sam Katz in October of 2007 to address municipal issues that are faced by older adults in our city.

On behalf of Mayor Sam Katz and all the members of the Age Friendly & Seniors Advisory Committee, I would like to ask your assistance in distributing the attached application to youth 18 years of age or younger. Entries must be submitted to Mayor’s Office by 4:30 p.m., September 15, 2014.

If you have any questions regarding The Senior of the Year Award, please contact Councillor Grant Nordman at 204-986-5920 / gnordman@winnipeg.ca or Pieter Prinsloo in the Office of the Mayor at 204-451-5238 / pprinsloo@winnipeg.ca.

Grade 7 and 8 Camp

Grade 7 and 8s had the chance this week to go to Pioneer Camp located on an island on Shoal Lake. The weather has been almost perfect and the kids have had a great time so far!

Students have been doing activities such as canoeing, doing hands on activities about erosion, taking hikes, doing scavenger hunts and learning different dances to name a few.

It's so great to see kids being kids and just having fun while doing lots of learning about themselves, their friends and the world around them.

Thanks to Mr. Bonnici for planning this great opportunity and for all the GWMS staff for spending five days away from their families to help supervise.

Pioneer camp is a great place to spend a week. Kids are 'offline' just enjoying their friends and their time here.

Survey Says!

This morning two surveys were 'pushed' to student iPads. One survey is for students and one survey is for their parents. The survey is about the digital learning initiative that the St. James Assiniboia School Division did this year.

There are two ways to access these surveys:
1) look for the button that likely has appeared on student iPads.

2) if you are a GWMS student click this link:  http://bitly.com/sjsdmobilestudent

3) if you are a parent or guardian of a GWMS student click this link:  http://bitly.com/sjsdmobileparent

These surveys won't take long. Your input is greatly appreciated and it will help us moving forward as we continue this project next year.

Care of iPads in 2014-15

As the first year of our 1-to-1 iPad Initiative draws to a close, the division is busy reviewing many aspects of the project to date. Throughout the year, IBM Professional Services consultants have been meeting with staff and most recently students to gather feedback on the project and assist the Division in evaluating its effectiveness. We are looking forward to receiving this feedback to inform our instructional decisions going forward.

One aspect of our project that has become a real concern is the continued level of breakage the division isexperiencing. Even with the added protection that the upgraded cases provide, the division is still troubled by the number of damaged iPads the IT Department deals with each week. Although, staff have repeatedly reviewed with their students the proper care and feeding required for their iPads, the breakage numbers continue unabated.

Following a review of the current breakage statistics and the projected high costs for ongoing repairs it was the decision of the Senior Administration of the SJASD in consultation with Middle Years Administrators that as of next September, Students will no longer be permitted to take the iPads home. The iPads will remain at school at the end of the school day.

Next fall, each middle years classroom will be provided with charging lockers similar to those in Early Years classrooms. Students will pick up their assigned iPad each morning in their homeroom and will be responsible for their iPad for the duration of the school day. At the end of each day, students will return to their homerooms where their iPads will be stored, secured and charged so that they will be ready for the next school day.

Next fall, the caution fee program will no longer be in effect as the iPads will remain at school. We do appreciate that we are dealing with children and accidents will likely continue to happen. With that understanding, the Division is prepared to assume the costs of in-school accidental damage, not unlike any other asset entrusted to the student. Parents will continue to be financially responsible for negligent or malicious damage to the iPad. School administrators will review these situations and assess responsibility on a case-by-case basis.

Letter Home for ALL Parents of Grade 8 Children

This letter will be sent home with all GRADE 8 students on Monday, June 9, 2014 (when all the grade 8s return from spring camp).

June 2, 2014

Dear Parents of Grade 8 Students,

This year has been a very exciting year for our middle years students with the implementation of the iPad initiative in Grades 6-8. This project is one part of the St. James-Assiniboia School Division's commitment to enhancing learning environments by promoting digital workspaces for students K-12. As your son/daughter transitions to Grade 9 in 2014-2015 students will continue to be given the opportunity to utilize technology during their school day. Although the division will not be providing one iPad for every Grade 9 student, students are welcome to bring their own device to school. Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) is a Division initiative in SJASD designed to embrace the mobile devices that students have available and bring to school daily. Allowing students to use their own devices in class will enable them to be more productive at school by allowing them to take notes, access digital resources and information whenever and wherever they need it. Participation in this initiative is completely voluntary and is a choice made by families. Please be advised that teachers will allow the use of these devices in their classrooms and at school as long as they are used to support learning. For students entering Grade 9, BYOD is the continuation of the digital learning environment in which they were immersed in Grade 8.

The following is general information about the Grade 9-12 BYOD Learning Environment. If you have any other questions please contact your school principal.

What devices will be supported?
Students are welcome to use iOS or Android tablets or Smartphones as well as Mac or Windows based laptops. Given the form factor, a tablet or laptop will better meet the needs of the students learning experiences.

When can students bring their devices?
Students will be invited to bring their device after they have signed exhibit IJNDC-E-2 Student Acceptable Use Agreement and completed any required forms that the IT Department may require to allow their device to access the Division’s wireless network.

Where can students use their devices?
Students will be allowed to use their devices in the classroom and throughout the school to support their learning. There will be guidelines governing acceptable, appropriate and safe use of these devices. Although students are using their personal devices, they are expected at all times to adhere to the Acceptable Student Use of Digital Technologies and Electronic Communication policy (IJNDC, IJNDC-R). Infractions of the policy will result in suspension of all wireless access to the Division network.

What happens if my child loses or damages their device at school?
Students are responsible for their device at all times. The Division cannot accept responsibility for lost, damaged or stolen devices.

Will they be able to charge their Device at school during the day?
Due to the number of students we expect will want to participate in the BYOD initiative, we cannot reasonably expect to provide charging facilities in school for student owned devices. Students will need to ensure that their devices are fully charged when they arrive at school.

Tell me more about the Acceptable Use Agreement.
The Acceptable Student Use of Digital Technologies and Electronic Communication policy (IJNDC, IJNDC-R) clearly stipulates acceptable and prohibited uses of the Division network infrastructure. The intent of the BYOD initiative is to support learning, not to allow students to text their friends during class. Providing students the opportunity to use their devices in school also comes with the expectation that students will do so in a responsible manner. Although the device belongs to the student, by choosing to use the device on the Division network, students also agree to abide by Division policy. While we will not confiscate personal devices belonging to students in cases of infractions, we will disable all network access to student devices in these situations.

My child doesn’t have a device to bring to school. Are there plans in place for these students?
Yes. Each High School will be provided with a limited pool of devices that will be available to teachers to use in their classes with students who may not have a personal device.

What if my child needs support using their device or getting it connected?
If necessary, IT Department staff will assist students in getting connected to the school WiFi network. Beyond establishing a connection to the network, all other technical issues related to the device will be the student’s responsibility to troubleshoot.

If you have any further questions please contact the office at your convenience.

Grade 8s attending St. James Next Year

They can simply come to the high school office to make an appointment. We will also be doing timetable changes in August from August 26th to the 28th.

Year End CARE Assembly - June 26 at 9 AM

At the end of every school year at George Waters we recognize students for their academic growth, citizenship and hard work through out the school year. This year a few changes to our assembly due to the new Provincial Report Card. The grade 6 report card no longer reports the growth and progress through a percentage mark grading scale for Grade 6 students. As there are no percentages to generate a year end honour roll certificate, Grade 6's will not receive an honours standing for the end of the year in the form of an honour roll certificate.

As a result of this new change, in keeping with this change for the Grade 6 population, we are discontinuing the honour roll certificate presentation at the June CARE assemblies for Grade 7 & 8 as well.

Any students in Grade 7 & 8 who receive an overall "honour's" standing (academic average of 79.5% or higher) will  an honours certificate but this will now be given to students within the contents of their final report card envelope that students can pick up later on June 26 or June 27.

This year's final CARE Assembly is on June 26th at 9:00 AM on the last regular school day of the year. Like all CARE Assemblies parents will be notified if their child is being recognized with something special. We will be recognizing ALL grade 8s this year with a formal presentation of each child's Comprehensive Portfolio that has been worked on since they began at George Waters.

Every GWMS child and their parent is invited to attend the June CARE Assembly to share in the successes of this school year.
