Addition Made Easy

This grade 6 mathematician is working on a math strategy for adding numbers with two or more digits. The strategy is called front end addition. First the student adds the tens, and then the ones. For example, for the equation 24 + 53, students will learn to first add 20 and 50 to make 70, and then 4 and 3 to make 7. Subsequently, the 70 and 7 can be added to equal 77.  This little shortcut helps make addition easy!  Great work!!

  1. We learned something very similar: Add the ones first, then add the tens (then the hundreds, etc). Just for fun, we would write the numbers in a column. 2 steps, no crossing lines.
The new way doesn't seem so much of a shortcut as an expansion.
If it helps kids learn, it's a good thing.
