WINNIPEG, Movember 9, 2012 – Local organizers of the Movember campaign will be saying a special thank you to the students at George Waters Middle School at a school assembly at 9:15 am, Wednesday, Movember 14.

Students and staff are doing their part to change the face of men’s health by designating Mondays during November as “Movember Mondays”.  On Mondays, a minimum donation of 25¢ provides them a sticker showing their support of Movember.  They also have the opportunity to purchase moustaches for either 50¢ or $1.  The school’s first Movember Monday moustache drive this week raised over $50 in support of prostate cancer research and men’s health initiatives.

The grade 6-8 school is also setting their GymBlasts around the moustache theme during Movember.

“Some male staff grew moustaches for Movember in 2010 and thought it would be fun to have the kids get involved in our moustache adventure,” said Carmen Bonnici, teacher and Movember participant.  “Movember Mondays were created that year allowing students to purchase their own 'staches' for a nominal donation – every little bit helps.  It also fostered conversations at school and at home about cancer, its effects, and how funds raised from Movember Mondays can help. This is our 3rd year and it is getting bigger and better.”

Principal Andrew Mead tweets during the first Movember Monday:

“You don’t need to be a man growing a moustache to get involved in Movember and make a difference, and George Waters Middle School is a tremendous example of this,” said Jeff Palson, Movember Winnipeg Co-Chair. “We want to recognize and salute the students and staff for their efforts and contribution.”
