In Grade 8 Language Arts, the students worked on an assignment called 'My Many Mood's where they connected different moods with specific songs. Ms Bakker gave them a couple examples on the handout and played the song “Don’t Stop Believing” by Journey. The students worked together listening to the songs and comparing their answers. Students were asked as well to describe the different types of moods people can have.
Next, students will be reading the book 'Coraline'. As students read the novel they will be comparing the moods and themes in the book to the songs they picked and reflected on in this activity. Students can also pick new songs they think of as they read the book. This makes the book relevant and deeper learning will occur because students will begin to make strong connections to their work.
