E-Cigarettes/Vapours

GWMS administration became aware of a small number of students becoming involved in using E-Cigarettes and/or Vapours. These are sold at many stores and are not welcome at GWMS.

Example of an E-Cigarette or Vapour

Mr. Mead and Mr. Abram met with all grade 7s and 8s to outline the concerns with using these devices. These will handled under the same umbrella as the St. James Assiniboia School Division Smoking Policy which states:

TOBACCO FREE SCHOOLS AND GROUNDS
The St. James-Assiniboia School Division recognizes its responsibility to provide a healthy working and learning environment for its students and employees.

All St. James-Assiniboia School Division buildings and grounds are smoke free. Smoking by any person, therefore, is not permitted in Division buildings or on their grounds at any time.

All students, employees and visitors are expected to comply with this policy.

This policy conforms to the Non-Smokers Health Protection Act, which governs smoking in public places and proprietor’s responsibilities. Section 5.1 of the Act includes specific reference to traditional Aboriginal practices:

“Exception for traditional Aboriginal practices

5.1 Nothing in this Act prohibits

(a) an Aboriginal person from using tobacco; or
(b) a non-Aboriginal person from using tobacco with an Aboriginal person;if the activity is carried out for a traditional Aboriginal spiritual or
cultural practice or ceremony.”

Consequences for smoking at school will follow our school code of conduct. Please help us keep these devices out of our school by talking to your child and informing Mr. Mead or Mr. Abram if you see or hear of these things being used by students at GWMS. Please help us keep them out of our school.

As always, please contact me if you have any questions.
