Page 1 - Introduction Letter
Dear
Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
September
is here! Classes have started and we are very excited to launch the 1-to-1 iPad
initiative at our school.
In
preparation for the official iPad rollout, scheduled to begin at the end of
this month, there are a few details here at the school level that we need to
address ahead of time so we can hit the ground running when the iPads arrive.
First,
we need to ensure that all Middle Years students have a dedicated Apple ID for
their use as part of the project.
And
second, we need to collect the appropriate paperwork and fees from parents who
wish to allow their child to take the iPad home with them at the end of each
school day.
In the
interests of minimizing our paper use, all information related to the Apple ID
and forms and payments required from parents has been prepared and posted to
the Division website at the following address:
Parents
without internet access who may require a printed copy of this material may
request a package from the school office. Please call 204-888-4898 to get a
printed copy of this material.
The
material posted online consists of three sections:
Online
Section 1: The Apple ID
This
section addresses the need for a student to have an Apple ID and also answers
the questions we anticipate parents may have regarding the Apple ID.
Part
2: Creating an Apple ID
This
section details the steps for parents to follow in order to create an Apple ID
for their child.
Part 3:
iPad Take Home Agreement and Caution Fee Details
This
section details the iPad Take Home Agreement for parents and the related optional
Caution Fee.
The
printed material that you are receiving as a part of this information package
includes:
iPad
Deployment Preparation Checklist for Parents
All
parents are required to complete and return this form to the school. It
outlines the tasks that need to be completed by the parent/guardian and what
other information, forms and payment are required to be submitted to the school
in advance of the iPad deployment.
St.
James-Assiniboia School Division iPad Take Home Use Agreement: IJNDC-E4
There
are two copies of this form included in this package. The white copy is for
parents to retain for their information and the colored copy is to be
completed, signed and returned to the school along with the Deployment
Preparation Checklist, only if you wish to have your child take the iPad
home.
St.
James-Assiniboia School Division iPad Optional Caution Fee Form: IJNDC-E5
Again,
there are two copies of this form included in this package. The white copy is
for parents to retain for their information and the colored copy is to be
completed, signed and returned to the school along with the Deployment
Preparation Checklist, and $25.00 (cash or cheque), only if you wish to participate
in the iPad Caution Fee Program.
Please
take some time to carefully review the information posted online. Again, for
parents who do not happen to have internet access, please contact the school
for a printed copy of the information package. We would be happy to send one
home with your child.
Staff
will be available in the GWMS office from Monday, September 16 until Thursday,
September 19, 2013 (3:30 PM – 5:30 PM) and during our Meet the Teacher evening
planned for Tuesday, September 17th beginning at 5:30 PM to assist
parents who may be having issues creating an Apple ID for their child. Parents
can pop into the school office anytime during the day from September 19 until
September 20 to receive assistance (8:00 AM
– 3:30 PM) as well.
iPads
are scheduled to be delivered to the school before the end of September. In
order to ensure a smooth rollout in classes, we need to collect the
information, forms and fees from parents as soon as possible. I am, therefore, asking that parents please
return the iPad Deployment Preparation Checklist along with any other applicable
documents and fees no later than Friday, September 20th.
I thank
you in advance for your prompt attention to this matter.
Sincerely,
Mr. Andrew

ST. JAMES-ASSINIBOIA SCHOOL DIVISION iPAD HOME USE AGREEMENT
The St. James-Assiniboia School Division (SJASD) is pleased to supply all Grades 6, 7 and 8 students with a 16GB Apple iPad Mini for use during the school year.
As the intent of this initiative is to make digital technology an integral part of curriculum and instruction, we encourage parents/guardians to allow their child to take the iPad home with them at the end of each school day.
Parents/guardians wishing to grant such permission are required to complete and sign the iPad Home Use Agreement.
Security
• iPads are issued and registered to an individual student. The student is responsible for their assigned iPad at all times.
• Any loss or theft must be reported to the school administration and/or local Police immediately.
• For security reasons, students are required to have a pass code on their iPad.
• Parents/guardians and School Administration (Principal, Vice Principal) will have the right to their child's iPad login credentials.
• Internet content filtering is in place while the student is using the iPad at school. Content filtering is not active while connected to any Wifi network outside of the school. Student’s access to the internet in such circumstances is at the student’s own risk.
• All SJASD management profiles installed on the iPad are mandatory and may not be removed. These items are used to configure the device and provide apps to students.
• The student is responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of any accounts and passwords they create, and they accept responsibility for all activity that occurs under their account.
Responsibilities
• The student is responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of any accounts and passwords they create, and they accept responsibility for all activity that occurs under their account.
• The SJASD Acceptable Use of Digital Technologies and Communications (IJNDC) policy applies at all times and in all locations the iPad is used. Although the School Division acknowledges that the iPad will also be used for personal purposes, the primary purpose of the iPad Program is to use the iPad when and where it is appropriate as an educational tool.
• Cost for replacement and/or the repair of damages that are not covered by the warranty and that occur to the iPad while it is assigned to a student are the sole responsibility of the undersigned parents/guardians.
• Estimated costs for lost or damaged iPad accessories include:
- Full replacement costs of an iPad Mini: $360
- Power Adapter: $20
- Syncing Cable: $20
- iPad Case - $20
Note: These costs are estimates only and may be subject to change.
• Optional Caution Fee – Parents/guardians may purchase a one-time, non-refundable Caution Fee for $25.00 that will cover the replacement of an iPad, once, as per Optional Caution Fee Form (IJNDC-E-5). Complete form IJNDC-E-5.
• Parents/guardians may consult with their home insurance provider to determine the extent of their policy coverage with respect to the costs of repair or replacement of the iPad.
• iPads and all related accessories (charger, cable and case) must be returned to the school administration if the student is no longer enrolled at the school where the iPad was originally assigned.
• Students are required to report any mechanical or technical issues with the iPad to the school.
• iPads and all related accessories must be returned to the school in good condition and in working order on the last scheduled day of classes of the school year. The iPad will be re-issued to student at the beginning of the next school year.
• As the iPad is an integral part of curriculum and instruction, students choosing to take the iPad home are responsible for the charging of their iPad and ensuring that a charged iPad is available for all classes. Students should plan on charging their iPad while at home for use the next school day.
• As a parent/guardian, I will discuss our family’s values and expectations regarding the use of the Internet and email at home and will supervise my child’s use of the iPad at home.
All communications and files may be accessed by network administrators at any time, so that the Division can administer and operate the Division networks; conduct investigations into violations of this or other policies; comply with Division duty, under provincial legislation, including the duty of the Division to provide a safe school environment, under the Public Schools Act.
By our signatures below, we agree to the responsibilities and guidelines listed above, the stipulations set forth in Policy IJNDC and corresponding regulations (IJNDC-R) and acknowledge receipt of and financial responsibility for the care and protection, under any and all circumstances, of the 16 GB iPad Mini, charger, sync cable and case.
